In Australia, a persons social class impacts their life chances. Critically evaluate this statement. Social class affects one’s life chance across a broad range of social occurrence from education achievement to health care to contact with the criminal justice system. This essay will argue that class has a remarkable impact on the life chances of an individual. It will further expostulate that high outcomes in academic performance in Australia is more prevalent on students from the high rank of hierarchy than those from poor families, that health issues are more profound in people from lower socioeconomic, and that youth from disadvantaged background are more likely to commit a criminal act. Don’t they deserve the same opportunity as those educated in private schools? In fact, the achievement gap between rich and poor students persists in the early years of schooling and widens as they progress through the school system†. Basic schooling should support those who struggle as well as those who excel and it should start as Dr Watson points out, at an early age. However, the 2006 OECD report shows that Australia spends less than 1 per cent on early education (OECD report 2006). Children who don’t have a sound start to academic life are more likely to drop out of school before completing year 12, thus narrowing their chance of employment. A report conducted by the Brotherhood of St Laurence on children aged 16 shows that of those who came from a low income family, only 84 per cent were considering completing year 12, compared to one hundred per cent of those who came of high income parents.
